NEW GIRLS OFFERING

Y2-4 Girls Smash

We want to make sure that every girl who wants to play cricket can, so this season, Cricket Wellington is trialling a Girls Only option for our youngest female players.

Girls Smash is a fun and inclusive way for girls to learn the basics of cricket in a low-pressure environment. There are many girls who are happy playing in the Saturday Mixed soft ball grades with boys, but we know there are other girls who would prefer to play in a girls’ only environment.

Teams will have six players and the playing format will be similar to the NZC Girls Smash programme.

Note - All girls' soft ball will run on Sundays at 10am

GIRLS HARD BALL

Y6-11

For 2024-25 season, Girls Hard Ball will be offered in two grades: Girls Hard Ball and Premier Girls Hard Ball. These changes reflect the wider range of ages and abilities of players, so forming two grades ensures there is a pathway for girls to enter hard ball cricket both as a new to cricket player, or as a player who has experience in the soft ball grades.

These grades are played on Saturday afternoons (generally from 2.00pm).

The key features of each grade are outlined below:

Premier Girls Hardball (Y7-11)

  • Top girls hard ball grade
  • For girls who have previously played hardball cricket in the Mixed Junior grades, in Girls Hardball grades, or a combination of both, OR are confident new cricketers
  • Confident players but still developing their skills and are not old enough, or not emotionally or physically ready to play with women in the Senior grades.
  • 9 a side
  • Will play T20, T30 formats (no grace period)
  • Batting retirements will still be in place

Girls Hardball (from Y6)

  • Entry, development grade
  • Development grade for those new to hardball cricket, or who are less confident hardball players
  • 8 a side
  • Will play 16 over pairs cricket, T20 format (with a 6-ball grace period)

This competition plays on Saturday afternoons so girls can choose to play Saturday morning (mixed) cricket as well.
